Creating a Cozy Atmosphere
A cozy home is inviting and comforting. Here are some tips to achieve that warm feeling.
Simple Changes
Use warm lighting, soft textiles, and personal touches.
- Incorporate candles for ambiance.
- Use layered lighting for depth.
- Add personal decor items for warmth.
Mood
Determine what frame of mind you want to room to feel like. Do you want it dark and moody or light and airy? Many people might think of cozy as dark and moody, but you be cozy in a bright and airy room too. Swap harsh bulbs for warm, dimmable lighting. Add secondary lighting like fairy lights or small lamps. Have multiple layers of curtains that can either let in some natural light or block it all out. Letting in some light and adding lighter colors will make the room cozy without being dark.
Texture
Add different textures that bring your comfort. Mix up the type of material that your pillows and blankets are made of. If everything is the same type of material, the room can feel stiff. Add some interesting wall hangings that help dampen sound and bring interest without being the focal point of the room. Pillows can bring some fun textures, but if you want them to be more for comfort, get covers that have one side soft so you can flip it over to lay on. The textures and patterns on pillows are great for guests and pictures, but when you want to cuddle on the couch to watch a movie, they need to work for that too.
Personal Touches
Add pictures and art that brings you happiness. Mix up the textures and add wood, metal, and softer edges so that there isn’t a harsh part of the room. Having items that bring out memories, stories, or evoke an emotion from you are conversation starters. Being cozy is a state of mind that needs to have your own touch to it. Otherwise, it doesn’t feel like yours. Hotels can be cozy for minutes but they start to feel stale and sterile. Only you make a room personable and cozy for you.
